Susana Hill is a photographer born and based in the UK. Susana first became interested in photography shortly after starting secondary school. She was self-taught until she decided to go to University of Sunderland where she just graduated with a First Class Honours degree in Photography, Video and Digital Imaging in 2021.
Susana grew up in Granada, Southern of Spain, where her most formative work was made. Her practice is based around wandering the streets with her camera and instinctively responding to her surroundings. She closely photographed the people who formed a local independent theatre group in Granada, one of her most characteristic bodies of work ‘Spain’. Featuring poignant and candid portraits of the actors, who she developed a close relationship with. Her series ‘London’ shows silent observations of the city. This is a collection of images captured from 2017 onwards, when she started frequenting London.
‘Distance’ is a series of environmental portraits shot in 2019 that show Susana’s peers sitting in their rooms as a way into their space and mind. In her body of work ‘Inside out’, Susana sets the scene of an empty space full of light, with the intention of seeking the essence of the objects photographed and those not seen in the frame.
Her most recent, and ongoing, project ‘Alley of the Rising Sun’ portrays a stream of consciousness about a defining decade and the passage of time during youth.
